You will be surprised to know that the Tuscan city that was
home to the largest number of Jews from anywhere in the Mediterranean was Livorno, which is considered as one of the international capitals of Judaism. The birth of the Livorno community took place in the 1500’s, with the promulgation of
the "Letters Patents" (also known as the Livornina) by Ferdinando I de 'Medici, that in order to give a decisive impulse to the development of the city and the economy of its free port, following the caging of that of Pisa, invited the Jews to settle down with their profitable commercial and business activities, ensuring in return complete personal freedom and worship. What makes Livorno truly unique is the fact that it was the only city where Jews were never segregated. Guests can visit the Museum, the Synagogue and the Cemetery. Florence of course has a strong Jewish presence as well. Comfortable attire is suggested, along with flat shoes for walking. Lunch will be provided at Ruth’s.
