2017 Internal Medicine Symposium

  Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the new Government Relations structure within SCPMG, as well as some upcoming legislative bills affecting physicians’ practice; and practice how to speak to an issue with legislators

  2. Identify and appropriately treat rheumatologic conditions such as gout, infectious arthritis and osteoarthritis through specific assays and workups

  3. Identify, treat and manage patients using updated methods of diagnosis and management of tuberculosis, skin and soft tissue infections, sexually transmitted diseases and non-surgical appendicitis

  4. Avoid prescribing the following medications to patients 65 years and older: tricyclic antidepressants and paxil; antispasmodic medications; and nitrofurantoin for chronic suppression of urinary tract infections

  5. Recognize delirium risk; perform and complete a dementia evaluation; deprescribe medications; and initiate discussion of POLST

  6. Physicians will use identified office-based tools to appraise cognitive levels of older patients with respect to safe driving ability and safety risk for independent living; and if needed, will be able to refer to appropriate specialty or to utilize appropriate resources for geriatric patients who are at risk for driving and for living alone in the community

  7. Apply the updates in critical care (ventilation, and transfusion management); incorporate HealthConnect alerts for transfusions, and utilize bedside ultrasound in critically ill patients to improve outcomes

  8. Utilize appropriate imaging studies and memory screening tests in the diagnosis of dementias; then customize medications management, and anticipate disruptive behavior changes of each dementia type for successful long term management of these patients
