Level: Beginner Description of Workshop Levels Technique: Annealing,Coloring Metal,Design,Fold Forming,Hot Connection,Metalsmithing,Metalwork,Mixed Materials,Patina,Silversmithing,Soldering,Tool Instruction,Torchwork
I recently came across a gorgeous copper and silver granulation bracelet I just had to figure out how to make. After many trials and errors and a lot of research, I ended up developing my own way of affixing fine silver granulation to a copper base to create it. I think you’ll agree that this is a technique you’ll want to add to your jewelry making repertoire and that this is a bracelet you just have to have to add to your collection of jewelry treasures. We will be using a butane torch to create fine silver granulation (small balls of silver) and a propane torch to permanently adhere the shiny silver balls to this impressive cuff. I’ll supply you with some design suggestions, or you can create your own. You will be shown how to easily create lovely little spheres of fine silver and how to attach them to your cuff. As a bonus, you will also be shown how to make simple fold forms in copper to corral those little granulated spheres so they won’t roll all over the place while you’re putting the flame to them! After your creation is complete, you’ll add a patina and polish your cuff to a delicious warm shine, with the silver contrasting beautifully to the copper. So, let’s get together to happily hammer, torch and torture metal to do our bidding. The end result will be something you will proudly wear and show off. All materials and equipment will be provided, so there is nothing additional to bring...You WILL complete this project in class. Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Must be at least 17 years old, willing to use a propane torch, be capable of using a hammer. Saturday, August 19, 2017 1036, The Stone's Secret - $275
Technique: Design,Metal Clay,Soldering,Stone Setting - Cabochon
Be honest: what is the first thing you do when you pick up a piece of jewelry? You turn it over and look at the back, right? Nevertheless, many of us tend to neglect the backs of our pieces, and at best file and polish them smooth. In this technique-packed class, each student will design and construct a pendant out of silver metal clay, featuring a beautiful cabochon. The back of the pendant will be at least as attractive as the front, and will hopefully utilize inspiration or motifs from the stone on the front. Each student will cut, carve or pierce a design into the clay, so that the stone will be visible from the back, thus unifying the design. After our backplates are fired, we will solder on a bezel and set the stone. Each pendant will be an individual work of art: your "stone's secret" will be the beautiful design that hides behind it! You WILL complete this project in class. Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Familiarity with silver metal clay, as well as basic metal working skills would be very helpful Materials you are required to bring: Students should bring a cabochon of their choice that speaks to them, either round or oval.
