PRESENTATION TITLE: The Second Half of the
Chessboard
AUTHOR: Todd Johnsen, Director, Eklipse
ABSTRACT: In this presentation Todd will take the
audience on a journey to 2050 highlighting some of
the key milestone events that have or will establish
(and explain) the foundations for the vision of space
and building occupier experiences in the future. The
presentation will include things like: 3D printing, 5G, the
Internet of Everything, autonomous vehicles, advanced
robotics, and smart machines.
It will then focus on a couple of key future milestone
events including the energy price tipping point and
wireless energy distribution and postulate that the
combination of all these elements will dramatically
change our current ecosystem by:
• Food production moving indoors – in multi-storey high
rise green houses
• Buildings can create their own sustainable ecosystem
by replacing redundant parking spaces with indoor
greenhouses
• A massive amount of earths arable land can be
reclaimed (70% is currently used for food production)
• Ensuring that we have no shortage of potable
drinking water
• The fact that power – including price and distribution
infrastructure - no longer constrain the flexibility of
building location and space design
BIOGRAPHY: Todd started his FM career with the
Trammell Crow Company in the early 1990’s – recruited
to build the first Corporate Real Estate outsourcing
business outside of the United States. He established
the Trammell Crow business in Canada and went on to
start up Trammell Crow in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
In 1999 Todd was part of the team that won the first
consolidated global outsourcing contract with American
Express and he led the global transition of that contract
for all countries outside of the US. In 2003 Todd and his
family relocated to Australia where he has continued
to grow and build businesses – for John McGrath,
Stockland, Lend Lease and Cushman & Wakefield. In
2007 Todd established his own business – Eklipse –
through which he continues to consult and advise on
numerous projects and strategies for a variety of clients.
Todd’s education includes a Bachelors of Architecture,
a Masters in Real Estate Development and he is
currently completing his Architectural Master’s degree in
sustainability.

PRESENTATION TITLE: The Psychology of Risk - what is
risk intelligence and why do we need it
AUTHOR: Gavriel Schneider, CEO, Risk 2 Solution Group
ABSTRACT: In a world of increasing complexity and risk
aversion we observe a growing dynamic of dehumanising
the way people think about risk. The focus of viewing risk
as just another compliance activity and the tendency
to drive systematised and process risk management with
little thought of people and culture has created a
stifling of innovation and missed opportunities and an
increase risk exposure. This is especially true for Facilities
Managers who must address such a wide ambit of risk
issues such as safety, security, emergency response,
governance, etc. The Psychology of Risk and the concept
of Risk Intelligence is paving new ways to turn risk
into opportunity.
The way we identify and manage risk has implications
for business success and organisational well-being. The
way we think about and influence ourselves and others
is critical to affect better decision making and judgment.
This session, based on leading research, introduces
attendees to the approach that focuses on enhancing
risk management from a psychological, cultural, and
behavioural perspective. The objective is to expose
attendees to the core concepts that rather than resist
risk or extinguish risk, managers should try to embrace
it and had better understand it from a psychological and
cultural perspective.
BIOGRAPHY: Dr Gav is an acknowledged leader in
the field of human based risk management and the
psychology of risk, He is a serial entrepreneur and has
been running his own businesses since 2001. He has
conducted business in over 17 countries and provided
a wide range of services for a very diverse client base
ranging from heads of state to school teachers. He is a
leading academic in his field and is a much sought after
International speaker.

PRESENTATION TITLE: Solar PV – a silver bullet
for sustainability in the commercial sector? & Smart
Buildings IoT – overwhelming information or uncaptured
value for FMs?
AUTHOR: Arman Sarkisian & Michael Cox, Cushman &
Wakefield Sustainability Solutions
SOLAR PV ABSTRACT: Solar PV is not a new technology,
and has been widely adopted in the residential market.
It is becoming increasingly cost competitive and is
emerging as the option of choice for corporates to
support achievement of environment and sustainability
objectives across their commercial portfolios. However,
this is turning the traditional approach to energy
management on its head, where energy efficiency
initiatives are being snubbed to pursue the sexy
alternative of renewable energy to curb carbon impacts.
BIOGRAPHY: Michael Cox is an environment and
sustainability professional with 15 years’ experience
working with industrial and commercial businesses and
government. Michael’s focus includes energy efficiency;
waste, recycling and materials efficiency; water
efficiency; carbon management; project management;
and stakeholder engagement.
On a day-to-day basis, Michael enjoys developing
genuine relationships with clients to understand
their drivers, risks and objectives with the goal of
demonstrating how effective strategy can unite an
organisation and more effectively enable outcome focused
action.
SMART BUILDINGS IoT ABSTRACT: Smart Buildings
and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are quickly
becoming mainstream with the capturing of all sorts of
data that vary from basic energy consumption to detailed
occupancy patterns, IEQ, etc.
Concurrently, the bar is constantly raised for the Facility
Management profession to adapt to this change
alongside the competing priorities of everyday jobs.
This means learning to understand and use different
platforms, and interpreting the information and its impact
on the various performance rating tools such as NABERS,
Greenstar, BEEC, and WELL.
BIOGRAPHY: Arman Sarkisian’s Journey in the
Environmental field started 11 years ago with a focus
on energy and operational efficiency in building design,
upgrades, and ongoing operations. Arman has a strategic
approach in identifying and scoping client relevant and
realistic measures for different types of facilities that
achieve tangible savings in energy and cost, and improve
the operational performance.
Arman enjoys researching and applying new and
innovative technologies that contribute to a better
understanding of facilities and development of a
holistic and sustainable approach in operating and
managing assets.

PRESENTATION TITLE: Creating the Leader Tomorrow -
understanding the desires of our future workforce
AUTHOR: Gijs Nooteboom, Managing Director, Veldhoen
+ Company
ABSTRACT: Strong leadership is a no brainer in
succeeding in the competitive world of work today. Yet,
even after all the leadership development programs
put in place, why do employee engagement surveys
continue to point at poor leadership? Gijs will share his
provocative views on how the evolving workplace will
challenge leaders to design a new way of working where
all employees are free to work anywhere, anyhow, and
anytime. Our future generations of workers will demand
that we re-define leadership and how leading with more
flexibility and empowerment (and less power and politics)
will create a better world of work.
BIOGRAPHY: As managing partner of Veldhoen +
company, the leading advisors of Activity Based Working,
in Australia (and globally), Gijs takes pleasure in inspiring
and helping organisations define their new way of
working, how they like to develop it and especially

the works that Facility Managers commission or oversee
to: “...ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that
the health and safety of other persons is not put at risk
from the work carried out as part of the conduct of the
business or undertaking’
Throughout Australia under the Commonwealth WHS
Act 2011, in Queensland under the Queensland WHS
Act 2011, and similarly in all other jurisdictions, there is
a clear onus setting out the duty of designers to ensure
that built outcomes are without risk to the Health & Safety
of the persons:
• Who use the product
• Who construct the product
• Who decommission the product
• Who manage, operate and maintain the product
This affects Facility Managers in their role as instigators

PRESENTATION TITLE: Data in the Visual Era
AUTHOR: Michael McCosker, Chief Operating Officer,
KnowLedge Asset Management Pty Ltd
CO-PRESENTER: Giuseppe Di Franco, Chief Executive
Officer & Co-Founder, AssetOwl
ABSTRACT: Visual recognition is crucial in managing built
form assets. Managing by exception, and visual evidence
of asset depreciation, degradation & deterioration can
all be provided using high telemetry imaging. Assetowl
has emerged to the world, primarily in retail, but its
application to asset management in the built form
is universal.
Making data into powerful information is not easy.
Converting the data, the right data, into perceptive
& intelligent decision making criteria requires skill &
integrity. Applications that allow data collection to be
automated and manual, all from a single platform,
ready for any other platform, including open APIs is
sheer brilliance. Mapping asset locations throughout
the process, using geolocation as the driver for visual
integration. Application to technology on associated
demographics & human patterns to comprehend asset
consumption has never been easier.

Officer of KnowLedge Asset Management Pty Ltd.

PRESENTATION TITLE: Investing in your Future -
AustralianSuper talks property
AUTHOR: Paula McCleary, Head of Property Operations,
Global Real Estate
ABSTRACT: AustralianSuper invest more than $10 billion
of member’s retirement savings in property and QIC are a
key investment partner. We live in rapidly changing times
with disruptive shifts that will forever change the way
people interact with shopping centres and commercial
buildings. To future proof our business and investments,
there’s no doubt we need to do things differently.
So, how do we re-imagine and create the places where
people choose to be? A place driven by people and not
just retail requires investment in research, design, digital
platforms and customer relationships. But it also requires
doing the basics better – personalised, automated,
multisensory, accessible basics where the customer
comes first, and the procedural stuff facilitates our
purpose. Can we find a way to hand the keys to
the customer?
BIOGRAPHY: Paula has 17 years’ experience in the
property industry and holds a Bachelor of Business
in Accounting and Human Resources. She also has
a Graduate Diploma in Property Real Estate, and is a
Victorian Real Estate Licensee.
