Unfortunately, this new technology is just starting to be taught at colleges and universities, but regardless, most of the professionals that are supporting these systems have left 5+ years their formal training and therefore lack the skills and knowledgebase. Training in the form of continuous education is essential as new standards such as DICOM, HL7 FHIR, DICOMWeb and IHE are constantly evolving producing new systems that include this capability. EMR Systems are generally not image-aware and rely on imaging specialty systems(RIS/PACS) to provide this capability wherever the physician has the need of reviewing images for their clinical decision making. In the past, RIS/PACS systems required separate workstations for this capability. New imaging specialty technologies, such as Zero Footprint (ZFP) Viewers, a new technology developed specifically to overcome the EMR integration and image viewing independent of the review workstation. This new technology introduces new integration and viewing capability challenges that go beyond the previous EMR/RIS/PACS architectural environment. Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), in collaboration with industry and the physician community developed and published standards-based profiles to address the integration and basic viewing capability. This session will explore the challenges and standards-based solutions which can be applied. | |

Mohammed Alomair, PACS Manager, Security Forces Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Vendor Neutral Archives (VNA) are touted as a great solution to facilitate enterprise imaging, to provide a portal for EMR access, and being a source and destination for inter-enterprise image sharing. Almost every PACS vendor offers a VNA solution and there are also a handful of dedicated VNA vendors. However, none of them are alike as they differ greatly in functionality and capabilities. This session will explain the different “levels” of VNA based on their functionality and capabilities, and list the major challenges with implementations and deployment of this new technology, especially with regard to synchronization of the VA with the PACS and how it fits into the workflow. | |
