9:30 am - 11:00 amLoss Prevention & IT
What does it mean when someone states they are PCI Compliant?  For example, simply signing off on an annual Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) each year DOES NOT equate to “we are PCI Complaint”.  Maintaining compliance is an on-going process that requires such things as periodic vulnerability scans and penetration testing, proactively applying system patches and updates, ensuring anti-virus protection is running on all systems and up to date, reviewing system logs/alerts and responding accordingly, etc.  Real-life examples will be dissected to show how easy it is for a vulnerability to quickly turn into a breach.  We will also discuss how Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) plays into the equation of maintaining a secure infrastructure.   During this session we will also provide an overview of the newly formed GII IT Security Taskforce that will provide Awareness, Collaboration and Resources for our Goodwill members.

4:00 pm - 5:30 pmBuilding a Proactive Loss Prevention Program

Presented by: Megan Witty, Donated Goods Retail Consultant, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.

There was a time not that long ago when many business people regarded Security and Loss Prevention as a profit inhibitor rather than a profit tool, rarely considering the impact of this industry when developing their business strategies. Many of the uneducated, or merely unaware, would often envision the profession as a one-dimensional “security guard” approach to resolving their issues, or perhaps foresee the sensationalized “cowboy” mentality when fighting theft in their stores. The profession was perceived as a necessary, but unattractive and largely unwanted cost of doing business, a value measured simply by the extent of its potentially negative impact.

Fortunately, those days are far behind us. Today those old school ideals would surely be considered the exceptions rather than the rule. As we continue to see more agencies implement a solid loss prevention program into their business plan, we also recognize there is a greater need for continuing education and training for loss prevention professionals. This session will discuss preventive techniques used in Loss Prevention, with special emphasis on:

  • Promoting shrink awareness within you agency
  • Creating metrics to measure shrink prevention
  • Current KPI’s within the membership
  • Fostering a collaborative environment within your agency
  • Skills at observing verbal and physical behavior the retail environment
