At the conclusion of the symposium the participants should be able to:

Infectious Disease in the Emergency Department, Updates and Cases

  • Diagnose and treat patients with infectious diseases in an effective and timely manner, including in the pediatric populations.
  • Effectively discuss treatment options with patients and family.

Updates in the Emergency Medicine Literature

  • Apply key learnings from recent relevant published literature in Emergency Medicine to their practice.
  • Identify significant literature recommending practice change and discuss the learnings with their EM and non-EM colleagues to improve overall patient care.
  • Critically evaluate newly published medical innovations

Updates in Stroke and TIA Management

  • Provide timely and appropriate care to stroke and TIA patients.
  • Describe the risks and benefits of stroke care

Pediatric Emergencies

  • Diagnose and treat emergencies in our pediatric population in an effective and timely manner

End-of-life and Palliative Care in the Emergency Department

  • Describe how palliative care can be integrated in the Emergency Department.
  • Describe the options for end-of-life care for patients in the Emergency Department.

Trauma for the Emergency Physician in a Non-Trauma Center

  • Diagnose and treat trauma patients in an effective and timely matter.
  • Stabilize the acutely injured patient.
  • Know when to transfer to a trauma center.

Evaluation and Treatment of the Patient in the ED with Neurological Complaints

  • Assess, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the Emergency Department with neurologic issues
  • Be able to correctly order, utilize, and interpret diagnostic tests including imaging studies for patients presenting with a possible neurologic emergency

Wellness in Emergency Medicine Lecture and Workshop

  • Identify potential causes of burnout for providers in the Emergency Department.
  • Describe how our stressful jobs can cause disturbances in our personal lives, and also possible errors in patient care.
  • Implement methods to improve provider well-being.

Women in EM Workshop

  • Recognized the unique challenges and stresses female emergency physician face in the personal and professional lives.
  • Develop methods to achieve personal and professional satisfaction and growth.

End-of-life and Palliative Care Workshop

  • Describe and discuss how palliative care can be integrated in the Emergency Department.
  • Discuss the options for end of life care for patients in the Emergency Department.

Trauma for the Non-Trauma Specialist Workshop

  • Stabilize the acutely injured patient.
  • Perform lifesaving and stabilizing procedures for the acutely injured patient.
  • Review and identify dangerous traumatic injuries.
