Plastics Chemistry for Non-Chemists

Plastics Chemistry for Non-Chemists

April 26, 2016
11am Pacific(2 pm Eastern)

Runtime: 1 hour
This webinar will cover:
  • Definitions: polymer, plastic, compound, resin, scrap, repro vs regrind, blend vs alloy.
  • The basic elements: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, CARBON, chlorine, and a few others.
  • How elements form compounds by holding "hands."
  • Monomers and how they react to form chains.  Why these "building blocks" are all gone in the finished polymer.
  • Addition polymers (PE, PP, PS, ABS, vinyls) and condensation polymers (PET, PC, nylons).
  • Copolymers of both types.
  • Bioplastics, and the difference between biosourced and bioactive.
  • Additives: they are not part of the polymer chain, but they are needed to make useful plastic compounds.
  • Environmental anxieties, related fear of chemistry and science briefly covered, including environmental advantages and NONtoxicity of polymers.
