The population mix consists of:

  • 77% European
  • 13% Maori
  • 8% Pacific Island
  • 10.5% Asian
  • 1.5% Middle Eastern/Latin American/African
  • 1.8 % other (New Zealander)

* Note: Total of more than 100% due to people being able to associate with more than one ethnic group.

Although people know Wellington, for its wind you won’t get far without hearing someone tell you that you can’t beat Wellington on a good day and with over 2000 hours on sunshine a year Wellington gets plenty of good days. During your time here Wellington will be in Autumn and the average temperatures will be 16.5°C - 11°C. In Autumn the weather gets cooler, but the skies remain relatively cloud-free.

Set around an attractive waterfront, you'll be hard pressed to find a city in the world that's easier to get around. Wellington enjoys more cafés, bars and restaurants than New York City, and its coffee and craft beer producers are internationally recognised. A creative, cosmopolitan city, Wellington combines the sophistication of a capital with the warmth and personality of a village.
