Myrtle Beach, SC
Located on the beautiful shores of South Carolina, Myrtle Beach is one of the key southeast tourism locations because of its warm climate and striking beaches. The town is full of great restaurants, entertainment attractions and music halls. The town’s marquee is its famous boardwalk, complete with the SkyWheel, an observation wheel that provides stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
1. The Beach
Ahh, the Grand Strand. So named by a newspaperman of the 1940s, the name has stuck, and it describes some 60 miles of wide, safe, beautiful, sandy beaches. With all there is to do along the Grand Strand, visitors regularly report that the #1 reason they visit Myrtle Beach is for the beach itself.
With more than 14 million visitors coming annually, it’s a good thing Myrtle Beach beaches remain friendly and safe, clean and inviting.
Early-morning beach walkers enjoy year-round quiet times as the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean, and late-night strollers, flashlights in hand, marvel at the spectacular moonrises and the haunting effect of a nighttime visit. Mid-day, especially in the summer months, the beach takes on a new energy while families and singles, young and old, relish in America’s favorite pastime.
The Piers
Aside from the world-class views and recreational fishing, the many Myrtle Beach piers also offer a variety of dining and entertainment options.
From simple hot dog stands to full service restaurants, vacationers can find something to suit every appetite.
Many of the piers also offer live entertainment several nights each week during the summer months. Open air rooftop bars, and covered dance floors keep the atmosphere lively after the sun goes down featuring smaller acoustic acts and high energy dance and rock ‘n’ roll bands.
Younger vacationers taking a break from the sun and surf may enjoy endless varieties of ice cream and frozen treats without ever leaving the oceanfront.
Myrtle Beach area piers such as Garden City and Apache also feature modern arcades filled with the latest video games. Classic games of skill such as Skee Ball may also be found, and players can redeem reward tickets at the gift shop for a memorable souvenir.
Segway and Bike Rental
If Paul Blart, Mall Cop, can master a Segway, then so can you! Or how about a bicycle? Numerous bike and Segway rental companies in the area are here to assist, keeping you mobile and out in the open air. Whether you want to leisurely pedal up and down Ocean Boulevard, or enjoy a guided tour on an electric motor-powered Segway, there are options for everyone. Cyclists may rent everything from casual beach cruisers and tandem bikes to mountain and trail bikes for exploring terrain off the beaten path. A map of Myrtle Beach area bicycle trails is available, as well.
The hi-tech, easy-to-operate Segway is a fun way to sightsee for the whole family. The motorized vehicle is suitable for young and old and ensures an experience that is fun without being physically demanding. Tours appealing to a variety of interests are available, and all Segway tours include instruction and safety equipment.
Golf
The modern day game of golf has its origins in 15th century Scotland. A game of both physical precision and mental toughness, golf is one of the most challenging and popular of recreational pastimes. The Grand Strand area, with its favorable weather and gentle landscape, is home to more than 100 golf courses suited to a range of skill levels. The well-manicured courses up and down the coast have attracted golfers from around the country and around the world.
Each year numerous area courses also host the Dupont World Amateur Championship, bringing highly competitive golfers to the area to test their skills against one another. A number of respected golfers and course designers also have signature courses here including Greg Norman and Davis Love III. The Grand Strand area is also home to a number of golf super stores, such as Martin’s Golf and Tennis, which provide a huge variety of golf clubs, shoes and other equipment.
Art Museums and Galleries
In addition to being a picturesque seaside destination, Myrtle Beach is also home to several venues where fine visual art is on display throughout the year. From handmade work by local artists, to exhibits by renowned painters, photographers, and sculptors from all over the world, a wonderful variety of artwork awaits visitors and locals looking to explore the area’s creative side.
