Cancer Research UK |
Thank you for deciding to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, your support is very much appreciated.
Cancer Research UK have already played a leading role in many of the major breakthroughs in cancer treatment over the last 100 years. In fact, their scientists and doctors have made significant contributions to half of the top 30 drugs used to treat patients worldwide today. But as one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives, their vital research, funded entirely by the
public, is crucial if we are to help more people survive.
In almost every type of cancer, they support more research in the UK than any other funder. Find out more about at http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/
By entering Bristol’s Big Leap you are helping them continue their life-saving work.
Did you know that…..
• One in nine women in the UK will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their lives. Cancer Research UK is the UK’s leading funder of research into all aspects of breast cancer, from uncovering its causes to finding new and better treatments.
• The lifetime risk for developing testicular cancer is 1 in 259. Advances in treatment have transformed the outlook for men with testicular cancer, with around 80% of men with advanced cancer and 95% of cases overall, now being treated successfully.
• Cancer is the most common cause of death due to illness in children (1 – 14 years). Cancer Research UK are taking two approaches to finding the cause of childhood cance, looking both for faulty genes involved in childhood cancers and the role of external factors like radiation or infection.
• 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer in our lifetime and 1 in 4 of us will die from the disease.
Did you know that 90 per cent of the UK's population live no more than 30 miles from one of Cancer Research UK's research sites?
Cancer Research UK spend around £2million a year on research in Bristol and Bath and over £330 million nationwide.
Across Bristol city, around 1,850 people are diagnosed with cancer every year. That includes around 270 cases of breast cancer, 200 cases of prostate cancer and 250 cases of lung cancer.
Research & Clinical Trials in Bristol
Research falls into 5 main categories:
-
Basic research: Understanding the biology of cancer.
-
Translational Research: Turning discoveries into cancer treatments as quickly as possible.
-
Clinical Research: Investigating new ways to treat, diagnose and screen for cancer in people.
-
Prevention Research: Finding out what causes cancer and how to prevent it.
-
Quality of Life Research: Looking at ways to improve quality of life.
2) IBIS 2 trial, looking at how to prevent breast cancer and treat it in its early stages
3) Children’s cancer and leukaemia group which coordinates the care of virtually all of the UK’s children with cancer ensuring they receive the most up to date treatments
4) Clinical trial looking into ‘faulty genes’ passed on in families
5) World renowned Professor Chris Paraskeva continues to look into ways to treat and prevent bowel cancer. Almost 35,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year making it one of the most common types of the disease
6) Dr Richard Martin is running a study to see if screening for prostate cancer can detect the disease earlier and save lives
We are all aware of the current economic challenges. Cancer Research UK’s future planning is taking this into account, but they will not allow it to deter them from achieving their long term vision of beating cancer.
