Building a Data-Driven Internal Audit Function Course Description:
This presentation explores how internal audit functions can become truly data-driven by embedding analytics, automation, and AI across the audit lifecycle. Attendees will learn how data analytics enables continuous auditing, shifts testing from samples to full populations, and enhances risk identification. Real-world demos will showcase how AI can streamline anomaly detection and compliance monitoring, making Internal Audit more proactive and strategic. The session highlights how auditors can evolve into trusted advisors by leveraging technology for deeper insights and stronger assurance.

As artificial intelligence transforms how organizations operate, internal auditors are uniquely positioned to evaluate its opportunities, risks, and controls. This session explores practical, responsible, and immediately applicable ways internal audit functions can leverage AI to become more efficient and effective. Participants will gain insights into how generative AI and other emerging tools can streamline audit activities while maintaining strong governance and ethical standards. The course also addresses AI risk management, regulatory frameworks, and the auditor’s evolving role in assessing AI-driven environments. Real-world demonstrations will showcase how internal auditors can use tools like ChatGPT, and some other AI applications to improve productivity and insight generation.

Instructors:
Aaron Coen is a Senior Manager in Crowe’s Public Sector Group with 15 years of experience serving state and local government clients. He specializes in performance and compliance audits, program evaluations, and financial analysis, bringing both consulting expertise and firsthand knowledge from his prior work in state government. As a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Aaron has successfully led numerous audits and performance improvement initiatives, helping public sector organizations strengthen accountability, enhance efficiency, and achieve better outcomes.
Mark Maracciniis a lead partner with over 24 years’ experience providing risk and internal audit services. Throughout his career, Mark has worked extensively with public sector entities on internal audits, Federal and state compliance services, risk management services, quality assessment reviews, enterprise risk management, risk and internal control reviews, and finding mitigation. Mark’s experience has provided him with a deep specialization in internal control over financial reporting and compliance, and in the implementation of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards and International Professional Practices Framework.
