Trends to Watch for in the White-Collar Crime Landscape
Who doesn’t know someone who has fallen victim to a crime? As we prepare ourselves to be more vigilant and aware, the landscape around us continues to rapidly evolve. It presents complex challenges that individuals and organizations must address. Some may be complacent. Others may act too slow and not keep up. But no, not us! By understanding the latest trends, informed people can better resist and act on ever-increasing threats. You can protect both your own and your organizations assets and help those around you protect theirs.
Andrew K Behnke, Partner - Advisory, KPMG
Andrew has a combined history of 18 years working in Big 4 firms in risk consulting and 9 years of senior leadership in Internal Audit in publicly-traded Canadian companies. He has assisted many organizations in maturing Internal Audit and Risk Management practices in both Information Technology and Operational areas. A previous board member of the IIA Winnipeg Chapter and many years on the ISACA board (including serving as President) have given him many opportunities to contribute to the overall education and training of the Internal Audit community in Winnipeg.
Global Risks, Opportunities and Trends Effecting Internal Audit
Just as organizations are facing an onslaught of change and disruption that is unprecedented, so too do many of these factors effect the Internal Audit practices of those organizations. We have all been through countless sessions on the rise of Artificial Intelligence and cyber threats but what are the other trends and areas that Internal Auditors need to be mindful of? This session won’t concentrate on any one trend but will give the attendees information on a number of them and how to both understand their effect on the risk profile of the organization and maybe how to use them to their advantage to increase effectiveness and efficiency. We will, of course, look at AI and cyber but will also delve into other topics such as third-party risks, Greenwashing and analytics plus how to deal with skills diversification on the team and interdepartmental collaboration.
Edward Olson, Partner - Enterprise Risk Services, National Leader - ESG, MNP
Edward Olson is a Partner and the National Leader of MNP’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practice. With over 26 years of Canadian and international experience across public practice and industry, Edward is a trusted senior advisor to boards, executive leadership teams, and regulators. His focus is on business resiliency - helping organizations adapt, thrive, and create long-term value amid economic shifts, regulatory changes, and evolving market expectations. Edward supports clients in identifying, measuring, and managing material ESG-related risks and opportunities, with a practical and strategic lens. His work spans climate risk, carbon measurement, supply chain transparency, and sustainability governance - balancing compliance with strategic advantage to future-proof organizations and drive operational excellence. He brings real-world experience to his advisory work, including leading the strategic transformation of an alternative energy company - evaluating political dynamics, financial models, and sustainability priorities to reposition the business in a net-zero economy. Edward also leads MNP’s national services on ethical supply chains, including risk mitigation related to forced and child labour disclosures under Canada’s modern slavery laws. He also leads the firm’s national Bill C-59 practice, helping clients assess, substantiate, and strengthen their environmental and social claims to comply with Canada’s new anti-greenwashing legislation and avoid reputational and regulatory risk. Actively shaping the global ESG landscape, Edward serves on CPA Canada’s Sustainability Reporting Advisory Committee, is a Canadian delegate to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC 207 on greenhouse gas and climate change management, and co-chairs the Global ESG Advisory Committee for the Praxity Alliance. At the core of Edward’s work is a simple principle: resilience isn’t just about managing risks - it’s about unlocking opportunity. His mission is to help organizations stay ahead by strengthening foundations, enhancing governance, and aligning strategy with the world that’s coming next.
ESG Is Evolving—But Accountability Is Not: What Bill C-59 Means for Internal Audit
The world of ESG is shifting - politically, economically, and socially. Headlines question its relevance, some jurisdictions are retreating, and the acronym itself is under pressure. But beneath the noise, one truth remains: the core principles of ESG - climate risk, responsible governance, human rights, and transparency - are still deeply embedded in how businesses operate, compete, and comply. This session goes beyond the global narrative to bring ESG closer to home. While the geopolitical landscape is changing, new regulations like Canada’s Bill C-59, the anti-greenwashing law, are creating binding obligations on Canadian businesses. Misleading sustainability claims, unsupported environmental disclosures, and vague social impact statements are no longer just reputational risks - they’re legal ones. For internal auditors, this creates a critical moment of relevance – understanding our role in evaluating how management is meeting legal obligations like Bill C-59, and how the risk and compliance functions are identifying, assessing, and responding to the reputational, legal, and financial risks that arise in this evolving landscape. Join Edward Olson, National Leader of ESG at MNP, as he explores the global forces reshaping ESG, the emerging legal risks on Canadian soil, and how internal audit leaders can navigate this new landscape with insight, influence, and impact.

Cybersecurity 2025 – Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire!
In 2024, we discussed how hackers are perceived in the movies versus reality, risks to be aware of, and the laws, frameworks, and internal controls organizations should implement to reduce the risk of a successful cyberattack.
Now, in 2025, we will visit or re-visit the biggest current risks and some of the biggest and/or most impactful cyberattacks that have sent shockwaves through the industry in the past year. We will also look at the latest stats provided by the Canadian and American agencies tracking these crimes and discuss the biggest groups / foreign cyber armies stealing money, data, information, and identification.
However, no need to call the Fire Department just yet! We will re-visit the why and how to fireproof our organizations by revisiting the Canadian regulations that demand our attention, Cybersecurity frameworks designed to guide a successful program, and implementation of internal controls for “fire resistance”. We'll once again shine a light on commonly overlooked areas of risk and explore proactive measures that organizations can take to mitigate the chances of falling victim to a cyberattack.
