The focus of this course is to provide a review and update of Parkinson's disease symptomatology, therapies, research and mimics.
The course is designed for primary care providers and APPs.
The course will provide:
Identify the pathophysiology and symptomatology of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and discuss the current guidelines for pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management (PD).
Identify patient assistance programs to promote pharmacologic access.
Identify the impact of PD on cognition and mood
Identify how rehabilitative therapies (PT, OT, ST) and nutrition can impact disease management.
Discuss available surgical strategies for treating PD symptoms (DBS, focused ultrasound, gamma knife etc.).
Discover how to access clinical trials on cutting edge medical and surgical treatments for PD and how to identify research subjects.
Identify the specific clinical presentations, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the following atypical parkinsonisms and how they differ from PD:
Lewy Body Dementia
Multiple System Atrophy
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
Corticobasal Degeneration
Vascular Parkinsonism
Drug-induced Parkinsonism
Discuss how to coordinate PD care with multiple specialists and how to locate available resources for patients and their care partners.
Recognize cultural differences in the presentation and identification of PD symptoms and varied outlooks on therapy.
Recognize your own implicit bias and how it impacts patient outcomes.
