How to Apply

The SDSC Summer Institute typically receives over 100 applications annually, with approximately 45 candidates selected for participation. Applicants will be screened to make sure that they have the necessary background to benefit from the institute, and that the applicants have a compelling need for the skills being taught in their research or teaching.

Key Selection Criteria:

• Must be from a U.S. Institution or company
• Institutional email address must match your institutional affiliation
• Verified ACCESS-CI Portal User
• Compelling Need: Applicants must demonstrate how the program’s skills (HPC, data science, AI, ML) will directly advance their research or teaching.
• We encourage applicants from U.S. institutions with limited or no access to supercomputing resources, with emphasis on broadening participation across scientific domains, to apply. 
• Alumni may reapply after a 5-year hiatus to ensure opportunities for new participants.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with UNIX/Linux and basic programming (required for advanced topics) are verified to ensure readiness for hands-on learning.

Room and Board Scholarship

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)

SDSC offers a limited number of room and board scholarships for the HPC/DS Summer Institute, covering:

• On-campus housing: Private dorm-style rooms with shared common spaces and bathrooms.
• Meal plan: Access to campus dining facilities during the institute.

Important Notes:

• Scholarships do not cover travel expenses (airfare, ground transportation, etc.).
• All attendees must pay the registration fee ($350/$600), regardless of scholarship status.
• On-campus housing is limited. Apply early to maximize your chances.

Travel Award

The HPC & Data Science Summer Institute will provide a limited number of travel awards to offset the cost of airfare and other identified travel expenses. These are in addition to the room and board scholarships. The travel awards are intended for those who lack financial support from their institution and would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of attending.
