Educators in Grades K-12

The NASA Educator Professional Development Collaborative at Texas State University is providing a 1-hour webinar.

Calling all secondary teachers who engage students in real-world problem solving with authentic data…. Do you engage students in research activities that require them to grapple with authentic data?  Teachers, do you endlessly scroll social media and websites looking for data-rich apps, data portals, etc. that can be used to engage Earth science students in real-world phenomena? Do you struggle to answer students’ questions about Earth science data, how they are collected, etc.? If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, this session is for you.

NASA distributes over 60 petabytes of free and open Earth science data per year to over 4.7 million people. However, finding (and using) the data can be complicated, requiring expert knowledge of the datasets and related tools that students and teachers rarely possess. Join Elizabeth Joyner, NASA Earth Science Data Systems Community Coordinator, as she aims to demystify access to NASA Earthdata.  She will explore resources that help to facilitate the access and use of data for a range of transdisciplinary Earth System Science topics, including wildfires, tropical cyclones, extreme heat, sea level, agriculture, and more! We will review popular tools, apps, and other resources to inspire teachers to embed data and data-rich tools into your instruction.  If you are new to integrating Earth science data, no problem! We will also provide overviews of two additional resources: Mission: Biomes, a data-rich resource that supports interactive learning and awareness of seven terrestrial biomes, as well as the EO Kids publication written for ages 9-14.

Elizabeth Joyner recently joined the Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program Communications Team as the Community Coordinator and will be working across the program to promote the use of NASA data and resources with end users. She previously served as the Senior Outreach Coordinator for NASA Langley Research Center’s Science Directorate as the Task Lead for the My NASA Data project. Elizabeth is a seasoned science outreach specialist and brings more than 25 years of experience working with government agencies, non-profits, and education institutions.

Barbie Buckner is a 20+ year STEM classroom teacher with a Doctorate’s Degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Louisville. Her research interest included the impact of technology on student achievement and teacher behavior. Buckner recently served as a 2013-14 Einstein Fellow at the National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources Directorate where she collaborated with colleagues on learning, learning environments, boarding participating and workforce development. Barbie sees education as her calling and has spent her life sharing her love for learning with everyone around her. Knowing that today’s student will compete in a global economy, Barbie says that “It is imperative that today’s students are prepared with consistent rigorous and relevant standards that produce more STEM majors, particularly women, to keep this great nation at the forefront in technology, innovation, and advancement.”
