MAJOR GENERAL JOHN CANTWELL AO DSC (Ret) - Leadership In Action

John Cantwell’s presentation draws on four decades of high-level military command, including in three wars, recovery from natural disasters, and leadership of major organisational change.

His key message is that true influence flows from your personal leadership, not your job title.

His talk highlights the power of leadership to profoundly influence individuals and organisations. He outlines a framework of highly effective leadership behaviours learned the hard way: through hands-on experience in difficult and occasionally deadly circumstances.

By focussing on key leadership behaviours, John affirms the importance of accountability, the delivery of change through big ideas, decisive leadership, overcoming uncertainty, and the power of an inspirational leadership narrative.

Through real-world examples, John’s presentation challenges the audience to assess their responses to the accelerating demands of modern leadership.

Leadership is about people not organisations.

  • Great leadership is grounded in accountability for our decisions and actions.

  • Leaders drive change by developing and implementing big ideas.

  • Authentic leaders are decisive leaders.

  • Uncertainty is the norm; good leaders use it to seize an advantage
