Abstract: The digital world in which we live and work is awash with data, and it is forecast to grow tenfold by 2020. Entire industries are being disrupted or revolutionised by the use of data to make better informed decisions. Facilities management is no exception, not a day goes by without something said about big data and data analytics in the boardroom or in the office corridors. This presentation will look at how data & analytics are redefining the facilities management industry. How future best-in-class FM teams will need to consider capturing, integrating and analysing data to be at the heart of their remit. The ability to connect this with data and analytics from elsewhere in the organisation and generate potentially disruptive business insights provides a clear opportunity for FM executives to elevate their role as an agent of change within the organisation. To exploit data & analytics goes beyond fluency with buzzwords and notions. It is purposeful data relevant to business scenarios with one goal – uncover valuable insights that business people can understand and act upon. This requires senior level focus and investment in technology, data and most importantly expertise often not found within Facilities Management. This session provides deep insights into how an FM executive can exploit data & analytics to upgrade his/her role in the business.

MONDAY 6 JUNE 2016, 10.45AM – 12.45PM, FUTURE FACILITIES STREAM 

He has a wealth of experience in providing advice, conducting service reviews and authoring numerous service specifications. He also has experience of integration, audit, specification and procurement of facilities services. 

Abstract: A hot topic in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). Advances in technology in terms of documentation sharing platforms, easier and cheaper on line communications and the advent of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has led to frequent discussions on IPD.Facilities Management (FM) does not seem to be part of that discussion, why not and should it be? The answer to the second part of the question is an obvious and resounding “yes”. So why is it not and what can we do about it? IPD will continue to build momentum, especially as organisations seek different outcomes in successful buildings, where successful buildings are: flexible and scalable inviting and stimulating inspiring and accommodating What does this even mean and how does IPD go about achieving these non-specific success factors? The American Institute of Architecture (AIA) in its IPD guide does not even recognise FM as a part of the IPD approach and the AIA in the same guide defines success of a project up to the end of construction. Lets explore why FM is the keystone to success for IPD and the success of our building portfolios, so that we can educate our peers, drive success and lead the change for the built environment industry.

Abstract: In this 40 minute presentation, Carl Sachs will provide advice on how to take safety and access considerations into account at the design stage to minimise or eliminate the need for specialized access equipment after system commissioning, including full lifetime cycle costings. Facility managers, property managers, landlords and tenants have a responsibility under the Code of Practice for Safe Design of Structures to implement the working at height changes so that technicians can safely maintain essential services like air-conditioners. The cost to maintain and service a poorly designed solar system can far outweigh the initial installation costs of a well-designed system. Participants will be briefed on the issues to consider with regard to the access for ongoing maintenance of solar systems considering the OH&S requirements, Australian standards and BCA requirements for working at heights. Delegates will gain an understanding of their fall prevention obligations and enjoy a unique insight into how to develop and execute a height safety plan that really works.

The introduction of the internet, social media, genuine mobility, a borderless world and soon to be available, robots to do your housework and driverless cars. But has the pace of change in service delivery in the FM sector kept up? If the future of the Planet is being looked after with the FM sector embracing and using technology, what about the other impacts? What about improving the sector’s impact on the planet? What about improving the lives of the people who work in the sector? What about improving the lives of the communities affected by the sector’s activities. Some of the more traditional, non-technical services have relied upon human delivery, mechanical delivery and input products that might be more harmful than beneficial. How much have those services changed and how much more needs to be done to stall that impact and potentially reverse it?

Time: 11.55am – 12.15pm (20 minutes) 
Author: Glenn Talbot, Managing Director, Verified 
Title: Uncovering the hidden costs associated with high-volume contractor activity 

Biography: Glenn Talbot is the founder and Managing Director of Verified. He has been General Manager of some of Australia’s leading service providers, has managed manufacturing facilities in Australia and New Zealand, and been responsible for national and international product distribution. Technically he holds an Associate Diploma in Applied Science and remains as an Independent Chair for Australian Standards. He has also been a volunteer Board member and Chairman of a successful non-for profit Industry Association. 
Abstract: The current methods of managing high-volume contractor activity data are grossly inefficient. Disparate data coming from multiple sources, as well as the huge time cost associated with processing this data does not allow for sufficient visibility over contractor activity. As a result, Australian businesses are paying thousands, even millions, in contractor overpayment each year, not to mention leaving themselves exposed to non-compliance risks. It is imperative that Facility Managers and building owners take complete control of their contractor management process. To do so requires becoming more receptive to technological disruption in their field. Managing the input of contractor information and sending it to a central source allows FM’s to have instantaneous access to all of their data in real time and an improved ability to reconcile contractor activity with invoice payment. Use of this technology also leads to large savings in administrative costs.

Abstract: The advantages of renewable energy are well known, including environmental, economic and fuel independence benefits. However renewable energy is often more accessible for Building Owners than Tenants. We will explore the barriers facing Tenants and how they can overcome these to receive equitable access to renewable energy. With an increasing number of companies declaring ambitious corporate targets for reducing emissions and wishing to demonstrate their sustainability commitments, it is as important for Tenants as Building Owners to have access to purchasing renewable energy. Facility and Property Services Managers therefore need to have an understanding of the different renewable energy purchasing options available to Tenants. We will discuss the risks and barriers associated with each option, compare environmental credentials and analyse which method of purchase is most applicable to differing asset types (commercial, industrial, health and aged care etc.) Attendees will develop an understanding of the drivers, barriers and options for renewable energy purchasing. They will gain the confidence to assess their own energy and sustainability requirements and have the knowledge to optimally procure renewable energy.

We will discuss how we can further promote the importance of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) to all building stakeholders using the evidence on its relationship to occupant performance and productivity at work. We will demonstrate IEQ can benefit all building stakeholders through the measurement of occupant performance and productivity at work. We will explore how IEQ can become part of a total economy and standard business operations, and be on the agenda of financial officers, human resource management, and facilities management. To this end, we also wish to balance the feedback from Europe and The Americas to show how IEQ in Australasia can be integrated into standard business operations.
