About the Event: Donor Stewardship: Being the Best at Thank You

With the acquisition of donors becoming harder, more competitive and more expensive, having a robust retention strategy is more important than ever. As we know, donors aren’t monogamous, and they love to support many wonderful causes. So how can you stand out, grow your donor base, and build meaningful long-term relationships with your donors across your fundraising programs? It starts with ‘thank you’.

In this presentation, we will cover:
  • The leaks in our donor buckets we can plug to improve second gift rates and the renewal of existing donors
  • Practical examples of how MS Queensland transformed their individual giving program to maximise engagement and raise more money
  • Being the best at “thank you” across all fundraising activities, and the importance of organisation-wide participation

Bethany Smith
Donor Development Coordinator
MS Queensland
Bethany has been a professional fundraiser for the past 13 years, starting out as a face-to-face fundraiser chatting with sweet elderly people in their gardens and playing with their fluffy dogs. After a couple of years and an impressive daily step-count, she discovered she could fundraise in air-conditioning as a tele-fundraiser, and represent even more causes close to her heart. Throughout her career, the donors who touched her heart have been her main motivation, making her a master of ‘donor love’.

A year and a half ago, she joined the Donor Development team at MS Queensland to help grow their individual giving program. Beth’s variety of experience in tele-fundraising, direct mail appeals, data management and supporter engagement has given her a thorough understanding of the donor experience, and what motivates donors to give – and to give more!

Anyone who has worked with Beth will tell you she’s a softie at heart, and will tear up at the mere mention of a cute story, a lovely phone call or a handwritten note from a donor. Just the word ‘oldie’ will bring a tear to her eye. It’s this passion that’s helped Beth master the art of building genuine relationships with donors, thanking and recognising them for their support, and reporting back the impact of their generosity.
